Artist Statement:
My paintings are constructed through responsive marks and forms. I am organising a surface of colours that are in dialogue with one another. Multiple visual languages coexist: abstraction and figuration, depth and flatness, gesture and structure. The materiality of paint is my central concern, emphasising the process-based nature of painting. The physical presence of paint and its interaction with colour and space. My compositions feature elements of both graphic flatness and painterly gesture. Maintaining an intentional inconsistency in the treatment of paint, my work explores the confines of the painted surface, pictorial image and creating space.
I create repeated forms and motifs throughout my work, employing techniques that emphasise the significance to how the paint is applied. I’m continually negotiating the balance between energy and restraint, allowing each form and mark to find its place within the structured space of the painting. Although the paintings are frequently read as referencing a digitally altered visual language, this association is ironic, as the production is entirely analogue.
There’s a medium specific agency, I'm choreographing paint to perform at its purest form, of its only subject to be paint itself.
